What Will 2008 Hold for WordPress?

Weblog Tools Collection published a list from Jeffro2pt0 of the developments and enhancements that WordPress brought during 2007 by documenting it using the free web timeline service called xtimeline.

WordPress 2.4 is due to be released on January 24, 2008.

New features for users include:

  • Admin redesign.
  • Widget-based dashboard.
  • Allow more widgets – instead of the set limit of nine currently.
  • Comment editing undo.
  • Search for both posts and pages

New features for developers include:

  • The ability to use $wpdb-> prepare everywhere.
  • Switch to expect unescaped data for internal functions.
  • XML-RPC refactor

WordPress 2.5 is expected to be released on April 1, and 2.5 will be out by July 3. So, lots of new enhancements scheduled for the next eight months or so, taking WordPress to the next level!

My only hope is that if Automattic is acquired or sold off during 2008, that the fundamentals behind WordPress stay in tact.

I agree. What makes WordPress such a great platform for so many bloggers to use is the fact that there are constant upgrades, extensions, and themes created for it. Currently, that is what separates it largely from the other systems.
