The Great Debate Over Post Length

by Kevin on April 21, 2008

Writing posts can be a tedious process, especially if you are writing about a foreign topic.  Readers don’t want to become bored out of their minds if you decide to drone on and on about something you are not interested in.

Your (average) posting length determines a lot about the type of blogger you are.

Post Length

Creating posts that contain a lot of information instead of a quick line or two will help a reader connect and understand the point that you were trying to get across.  Posts that are short, concise, and get right to the point allow a reader to get the information quicker.  In a sense, both have their advantages and disadvantages.

News sites and blogs either follow the approach of quick posts linking to another article with an excerpt of the source article or they will go into more depth and relate the importance of the article.  In either case, it is up to the reader to connect stories together, but to a lesser extent in the second example.  A post’s length you write can also do the same, if too long – fill too many holes that will disable readers from commenting, as you have provided them a complete opinion.

When I think about the ideal post, it is generally a few hundred words long, and presents readers with the ability to get the point, be able to form their own opinions on the selected topic, and relate to the writer/topic.  There is no right or wrong length to posts, but I (and many others) will tend to take the time to read one good, long post rather than ten short, concise posts.

Short posts are concise, to the point, and can be great for news-related issues, while longer posts are comprehensive, and usually insightful.

The way you style posts can make a huge difference in the way you present longer posts, as they are more similar to short ones in the sense that readers are not distracted from bulky paragraphs.

Experiment with your post length.  The great thing about blogs is that you never have to stick to one style.  Keep in mind your readership rate, return rate, and daily visitors before you begin writing longer (or shorter) posts.

What is your opinion on writing posts – do you favor shorter or longer ones?

I don’t think the length matters as long it is long enough to get your point down…
