New WordPress Themes Directory Launched

by Kevin on July 18, 2008

The old version of the WordPress Theme Viewer was closed for new updates, and now, just three days after releasing version 2.6 of the software, has completely redone the WordPress theme directory, as it is now called.

If you are a WordPress theme developer, you can utilize the new directory by signing into your WordPress account and uploading your theme. There are several requirements and advantages to uploading the theme through this method rather than by hosting the themes solely on your site, listed on the Requirements/Limitations page.

You will not be able to sponsor the themes or place premium themes, and you must follow the guidelines for posting themes (stylesheets, all theme files, screenshot.png, and related files) must be included in a single zip file.

Advantages are that more people will be able to use your theme compared with hosting it on your blog, with ratings, stats, and comments in the directory.

The new version will greatly benefit the community, which is pretty much used to the new version of the plugins directly, and it provides a more secure place for themes to be downloaded from.

One of the only downsides is the lack of themes (3 with a total of 679 downloads), and a somewhat low-grade experience for browsing through dozens of themes at once.
