Its a much better user experience and even we had relatively low spam levels, the few we had ceased completely. Mollom is generally free and the Module [at least for Drupal] is easy to implement. The captcha is only shown for suspicious posts and IP addresses - so ordinary user won´t even realize that there is a captcha.
