Magazine theme is simply tool to solve very specific tasks for blogs with large amount of content. And there is usability price to pay as well. Fortunately complex setup mostly stops people from using it when it's not really needed. :) In my opinion plenty of people consider magazine themes popular trend – it isn’t.
