Blog Action Day 2008
by Kevin on October 15, 2008
Blog Action Day is a day in which bloggers from around the world unite to help spread word about the conditions that people must live in day in and day out, in poverty. With everyone focused on a single, dedicated subject, the idea is to help people become aware of what people go through who may be less fortunate than those writing behind the blog.
Bloggers like voicing their opinion, making this a great way to share their perspective and connect with their readers, encouraging them to continue in their personal fight to end poverty around the world.
However, just because October 15th only lasts for 24 hours, no matter where you are or what class you are in, you need to contribute. You can help those in poverty nearly any day of the year – the main ways are by Publishing a post, relating to “Poverty,” Donating a day’s earnings from advertising, affiliate earnings, donations, or product sales to microfinance a loan or give to a charity, or Promote the day using the tools that have been provided.

It doesn’t take much to end the struggles of a single person. Take some time away from your “personal” activities and travel to the local shelter, volunteering some man-hours to help feed the hungry.
This year, more than 12,244 sites participated, with an estimated audience well over 13 million.
Suggested Ways to Take Action Against Poverty Right Now
Tips from participants at The Take Action Blog.
- Eat meatless meals two times per week. Donate that grocery money to a local food bank.
- Be homeless for a day and/or night.
- Stop putting off adopting a child through an organization like Compassion International (or adopt another one).
- Make a loan on Kiva, or buy a couple gift certificates and give them away to friends.
- Get a group together to go door-to-door collecting canned goods for your local soup kitchen or shelter.
- Take a homeless person to dinner and actually sit/talk with him.
- Stop being lazy. Find a way to do your job better so that you can save an hour a day, or be that much more productive.
- Stop buying junk to make yourself look pretty and donate it to homeless and hungry people.
- Make flyers to stick in the local library.
- Donate your musical instruments you no longer use to the still-struggling musicians and students in New Orleans (or another location in need), recovering from natural or man-made diasters.
