Reader Trust Outweighs Authority

by Kevin on January 2, 2009

Before you can attain new visitors, subscribers, or general “acceptance” within the community that you have placed your blog into, you must gain respect, trust, and become an authority in your niche. I previously covered the topic of authority, which is slightly different than trust.

The main idea behind the two is quite simple, although you need to know what to do in order to accomplish each of these principles on your own blog.

trust is the firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something; as in they have been able to win the trust of others.

– authority is the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience; as in he spoke with authority on the subject.

Until you accomplish trust, not to mention the authority factor, you won’t be able to grow your blog (and everyone wants to reach new heights each month with their blog). Much can be said about how you go about accomplishing these key concepts.

Some of the key factors in trust include:

  • Being consistent in how you operate – publishing fresh, new posts each day (or on a consistent basis).
  • Creating content that people want, putting you in charge of providing relevant information.
  • Not straying from your main focus too often. In other words, even though you may still be providing what you have always done to gain the trust, you have broken that with content that doesn’t appeal to your readers.
  • Breaking from the mold to accomplish what you and your readers want to achieve.

Unlike authority, it can take much longer to achieve trust with your readers. They may, at the same time, view you as a leader/authority, but they won’t have the level of trust that it takes to make you a trustworthy source of information.

When the media, or anyone, for that matter, tries to portray bloggers, they do so in a negative fashion. As bloggers, we can attest to the fact that not everyone checks their sources or does background data collection to make sure that everything is being reported properly, but we still want to have that “trust” name attached to our blog(s).

Trust doesn’t come overnight. It grows in small intervals. More trust equals more repeated visitors/readers.

If you want to make a web site, but have limited funds or limited design skills, you may want to consider searching out a free web site template. Finding a free web site template is relatively easy. In addition to web design firms, there are also many web hosting companies and domain name registrars that offer this service.

A free website template will provide the bare skeleton design. When you are ready to make a web site, you simply fill in the empty spaces with your own text. In certain cases, your free web site template will come complete with images, and in other cases, you will only have frames and backgrounds to build upon.
