Changing a Blog’s Focus
Over time, the focus of your blog may erode into the realm of new posts that flow onto the main page of your blog each day. It can happen to anyone. Even though you might not realize it, your view of your blog changes each day, depending on how it grows, how readers view your site, and other critical factors.
Along with this psychological evolution, your content also begins to deteriorate, from a once-new focus into content that your original readers have a hard time dissecting. It can be a difficult period, but also one that must be dealt with if your focus has changed.
Changing the focus while your blog is relatively active is not ideal, but can be attained should you put the effort behind the “switch.” You have to think about it more as an “addition” than a complete redo of your blog.
For example, I’ll run down the basics on switching formats if you were to encounter this with your own blog.
- If you were blogging about a particular subject (Blogging, for instance), but you want to switch to a more broad topic that might contain blogging as a sub-topic, it is achievable.
- First, you would have to either purchase a new domain or add a subdomain to your blog. This is the most critical step. A lot is said about your domain and blog title. Unless you chose a relevant one, you will have an extremely difficult time branding.
- Next, you’ll have to redirect your previous site to the new URL or subdomain, should you have chosen to use this method. If you are more conservative, you’ll probably be more apt to using a different tagline, changing the theme, or addressing the problem.
The best advice that I have to give regarding a change in your focus would be to do what you believe is right. Whether or not your readers acknowledge and adapt to this change, is dependent on how you (re)market your blog and what you have to offer.
While it might not be apparent immediately, as long as you continue your tradition of providing top-notch quality, you shouldn’t encounter major problems refocusing on a single area or expanding your blog to other niches.
