Should I Post That?
by Kevin on February 22, 2009
Sometimes people want to know whether something is worth of posting. Much like natural traffic cycles, your “train of thought” has high and low points. At times, you are able to think of hundreds of topics to write about, while at other times, it becomes difficult to get the first word down. Deciding what to publish and when can be a difficult fact of blogging that you have to accept and deal with as your blog and your career as a blogger ages.

Questions to Ask
There are several questions that you should ask yourself before publishing something on your blog, or the Internet, for that matter.
- How will this benefit my readers?
- Are there any possible consequences should I post this and receive negative feedback?
- Do I potentially infringe on another’s rights?
- How will this benefit myself – the motivation factor behind blogging?
How to Handle the Content
What ends up happening with many bloggers is that they have an immense amount of content available when they start the blog, but then as soon as they start blogging, they forget it all and their blog remains rather empty. This ends up ruining their main intentions when starting the blog. However, you don’t have to go down this path, even if you started this way.
Let’s assume that you don’t have much content available right now, but are able to sit down and think about what you want to publish on your website over the course of a week or so.
- Start by collecting a bank of ideas. This will help form a catalog of potential ideas for publishing at a later point.
- Remember, this isn’t about breaking from a period of writer’s block, but handling a lot of content.
- By the end of the week, after you have jotted a few ideas down each day, you will have a collection of posts that you will be able to place on your blog over the upcoming week.
- Using this cycle, you are able to more effectively maintain the amount of content without worrying about forgetting what you wanted to publish.
Content Readers Want to See
Time and time again, I see people that get a huge flood of ideas and publish them all in the span of a day or so, then simply abandon their blog. This is the worst path to follow as they probably haven’t followed any logical structure and readers don’t like seeing multiple posts on the same day or posts few and far between.
In the same respects, you want to have quality content. Getting back to the title, if you don’t think your readers will find value in your content, do not publish it. Even though you find something interesting, such as a link to another site, image, or video, they might not find it as funny/interesting, and potentially offensive.
Keeping these ideas in mind, it is important to balance the number of posts you publish per day, number of links to outside resources/sites, and types of content (images, video, text) each day. It is in your best interests to remain neutral on as many subjects as possible, even if you run a blog that is more of a “collection” of your favorite websites.
