A Better Approach to Guest Blogging
by Kevin on March 2, 2009
Often, guest posting is frowned upon because, other than the link back to your site and the extra traffic (a little extra in earnings or small increase in subscribers) you receive, it doesn’t give you a huge number of benefits for the amount of time you put into writing it and preparing it for the blog you have sent it to. However, you need to be aware that there are other options, as long as both parties are able to agree on a compromise.
Think of the task more as a free marketplace, where you are free to share ideas with one another. You have to keep in mind that not all bloggers share the same principles, if any, and so you want to bring contrasting and conflicting viewpoints to your blogs – it makes it that much more interesting. One blogger might feel that one technique works well, while you have a much better idea of accomplishing the same thing.
When you plan on inviting another blogger to write a guest post on your blog, also have a post ready that is unique and hasn’t yet been explored before (this can be a quite difficult task – ensure that the person hasn’t yet written about it on their blog). Then, tell this person that you are going to send them a guest post for their blog. It is more of an exchange than anything else.
The Advantages
- Both parties receive something in return, even if the quality may “differ” slightly depending on the writing level of each person.
- Links will distribute traffic between the blogs, rather than from one blog to another.
- Both your readers and yourself receive a different viewpoint.
- You are able to promote your blog in a more effortless manner through the other’s blog.
The Disadvantages
- One party might not want the other to write a guest post on your blog or vice versa. In this case, you might be forced to abandon this idea completely.
- You have to be careful in selecting the blogs you want to use this idea on (larger blogs receive less in return).
- It can take much longer to find the matches for this to work ideally.
Conclusion
Employing this “quick” technique can be a great way to distribute traffic among blogs and capture a larger audience while not sacrificing as much in terms of time lost versus return in that time investment. It can work – just make sure that everyone is in agreement before sharing posts or links.
