Managing Multiple Feeds

by Kevin on March 10, 2009

Having multiple feeds for a single blog can be a long-term investment that you should look into, especially if you plan on running a blog that covers multiple topics, i.e. a news blog or one where there is a more diverse audience. The main reason for doing this is that your readers and visitors most likely won’t want to read items or content from each of the categories your cover, but instead, they want to remain informed about the select few. Therefore, adding multiple feeds simply makes sense. Plus, it’s quite easy.

In the case of this blog, there may be some people who want to be informed of specific categories, such as “Blogging Tips.” All you would need to do in this case would be to input the category URL into FeedBurner or a similar service to begin tracking it. There may also be a built-in method for creating feeds, depending on the blog platform you may be using.

Effectively Managing Feeds

Having one feed for each blog may be the simplest manner to distribute your content, but this might not be the case for all people, especially those with multiple blogs or multiple feeds for each blog. In this case, you need to employ a method of managing feeds that is both effective and not overly time-consuming.

Within FeedBurner, you can have some level of organization, although it isn’t the best solution. Like many other services, the most effective approach would be to create additional accounts for other domains, but you have to stick with one approach in order to maintain some level of consistency for both you and your readers.

Placing Multiple Feeds on Your Blog

Despite the fact that the average blog only has two feeds displayed (content and comments), you can add additional feeds in a manner that doesn’t restrict traditional content, yet gives the option for readers that may be interested in subscribing to select categories or interest groups.

  • Place the RSS link next to categories within your sidebar.
  • Invite your readers to subscribe to the category RSS at the bottom of these select posts.
  • If you have a “Subscribe” page, you can add them here, although this page isn’tviewed as often as your main page.

Conclusion

In a wrap-up, adding multiple feeds to your blog presents your readers with more flexibility and options, although doing this can also be looked at as excessive, especially if your readers are able to find your content fairly easily simply by browsing your blog or inputting some search queries.

On the other hand, for larger blogs, managing feeds is critical in order to keep your readers informed and not overwhelming some with too much daily content (blogs that publish 10+ articles per day).

All in all, it depends on the type of blog you have and how you plan on using feeds to your advantage.
