How to Pair Twitter and Your Blog
by Kevin on March 25, 2009
A recent update with how Twitter is displayed in search results as Your Name (Company/Site) will help more people be discovered when searching for other sites that you may author. This may come as a big bonus for you and your readers or anyone trying to research you, as the owner of blogs.
Let’s give a prime example of how this might work.
– Someone visits you blog but wants to know whether you have a Twitter account in order to subscribe to updates from you. They might try scouring all throughout you blog, but in the end, they waste time searching for a link that isn’t there. However, your name has been connected to your blog, so they use this as enter a parameter that will only find sites with Twitter as the address and your name as the username or as part of the page.
In this case, it became easy to find additional information about yourself (the owner 0f your blog) because you had connected the two forms of medium together. Had you chosen to use a completely different username or a different website connection, it would have been much more difficult to find you. For the most part, unless you run multiple completely separate blogs, associate your personal/business account with your sties. This adds some consistency, and that is what users look for.
Why Twitter is So Useful
As demonstrated in the example above, you can use Twitter to send out updates about the status of your blog and answer quick support and regular questions without opening up your email client and writing a new message for a simple question.
With more links appearing in search engines to the service, it will begin becoming easier to find other users and their updates, should they also be indexed. Not everyone will be indexed, and it could take time before you even see your account reach the first page of results for a more broad keyword found on your profile/account.
You can’t really compare Twitter to blogs when you look at them in this way – they are separate and were designed to be used for different purposes. You don’t have full control with Twitter and are limited on purpose, while you have much more freedom on your blog.
Why Pairing is Important
Think about your contact information on your blog. What if someone was unable to access this? They’d probably just dismiss the questions or comments that they were going to pose to you. They had no real method of contacting you so they had to go elsewhere, to another blog to express their thoughts.
A Twitter account can be referred to as another form of communication, much like emailing, instant messaging, or even calling someone. Leaving out a Twitter account (whenever you have one) form your blog is a costly mistake that should be avoided.
Recap
- Use similar user names for your blog and your profile/Twitter page.
- Link immensely to your Twitter profile from your blog to increase awareness.
- Don’t hesitate to ask people to contact you through Twitter rather than other methods.
- Use proper techniques to increase the ranking of your Twitter profile – include keywords in content, update often, and so on.
- Don’t let your Twitter page go blank or without updates.

Hi!
I am still a bit blur about twitter. I have open two account before and both of them been closed because suspected as spam. I know I don’t update my twitter regularly but is that consider as spam in twitter?

Unless you were posting links to your website/blog or other sites, there shouldn’t really be a problem or dispute with your account and their terms. Just be sure that you contact them about the issue if your account is banned and they should be able to help, especially if you are able to prove that you were not spamming other members.
Updating your account/profile shouldn’t really matter. You are providing content to the service (in a sense) and adding value for them, so they actually encourage this.

Thanks for sharing – I am struggling with trying to figure out what to do with twitter – I have had an account for about five months and only have about six followers – I find it high maintenance to have to keep posting to it and then keeping up a website, blog, facebook, etc. – you can get overwhelmed with having to keep up with all of the social media – twitter requires more than the others as it is so limited. I do enjoy your site and as of a result of a change in my blog hosting company, I will be dropping Entrecard as of April 1st. I am bookmarking your site so I can continue to visit with you.

To get started using Twitter, experiment by talking with other people, following people you want to receive updates from, etc. There are tools available, such as Ping.fm that allow you to post to different networks at once, although it might be more time consuming at first to get it setup and working.
Thank you for bookmarking my site. It is a shame that the Entrecard terms forced you to leave Entrecard.

Hi Kevin, Great post! I’m on the fence still about Twitter there seems to be a lot of work that you have to do to keep up with Twitter. Then I’m still having a few problems with my acct. so that keeps me on the fence too, but maybe after this post I’ll put one leg over the fence and see what happens. Thanks. JJ

Yes, Twitter can be a daunting tool to use at first, but once you get the hang of it, there is nothing stopping you from using it to its full potential, or at the very least, what it was meant to do.
Perhaps you could try signing for an additional account to see if it is just that one account, otherwise you should try contacting the support to see if there is a work-around or problem concerning the terms or something else.

Twitter has got some real business potential. Once you get into it, you discover loads of stuff and get in hand with ample opportunities.

I agree, even the people who might not think that Twitter is useful initially can find it addicting once they become accustomed to how the service works.
