5 Reasons to Never Start a Blog or Begin Social Networking
by Kevin on March 29, 2009
Some people never want to look at a blog or face their potential success and change that could result from starting one. These are people who still think that blogs are overly opinionated and don’t offer any real value, as their “writers” just ramble on all the time about random, un-related topics. Even though it appears (at least to many bloggers) as though there are millions of blogs and nearly everyone has a blog, that is further from the truth than most would care to admit.
Despite the fact that we can physically see the number of blogs growing, it is difficult to put into perspective the number of people who still don’t have a grasp on what a blog is, how it can be of a benefit to them, and what the whole concept behind why they exist.
Now, this post may appear pessimistic towards these people and those facts, but the entire premise behind the blog is, in a sense, to get other people to join the “movement” and many still aren’t doing it or feel that they would never get anywhere – which, is probably true.
- Blogging takes more time than you think to get to where you want – which for many, is making a part- to full-time income. It will be several years before you can even think about quitting your job, unless you are able to devote an even larger portion of your time to blogging, which is a point where you are likely to interfere with your current job.
- Blogging to get some of your thoughts and ideas off your chest probably won’t work down the road. You need to have fresh ideas, but ideas that you won’t be building off of for each post. You have to go into your blog with a clear plan, not a spontaneous one that was created on the whim. Readers want to read more than just one central idea and hundreds of posts created off of that (main) point.
- The returns are so little that you might not even notice them. Often, it takes hours of work input into your efforts before you see your first comment, ten visitors, or first subscriber. Some don’t even think that those are worth attaining.
- You don’t have any knowledge regarding blogs and feel that it will take a lot of learning before you can even start. Despite the fact that this really isn’t true – you have years of research in front of you available within a few queries for free, some people use this as a reason not to start a blog. I guess that it is valid, but following instruction with WordPress.com or Blogger.com really isn’t that hard to do.
- Lastly, people don’t start a blog for the fear of failure. There is a lot of risks that you take starting a blog. Beginning with your name and credibility, blogs have notoriously been famous for people who have been left with nothing in the end, although those people are still in the majority – odds generally work in your favor when trying to make an income from your blog, even if it does only buy you something small each month.
Conclusion
What reasons did you use to stop you from delving into creating your first blog? Was it one of the reasons above or some other reason. The main way to get people to start a new blog is to convince them to change their original thinking about blogs and start fresh. With most blogs, sharing your thoughts with others is the biggest reward, even if you don’t make any revenue from the process.
What other reasons could people be putting off starting a blog or reasons why someone should never start a blog? (considering you’ve been a blogger for a decent amount of time)

Kevin, love your site and your topics. This is an especially good post, even for those who may believe they are “experienced”.

Nicely said. It’s important to remember that blogging isn’t just about making money (although that is really cool)….
