Determining Whether a Blog is the Right Place to Start

The line has blurred what a website is and what a blog is. Some would say that any site powered by a blog system, rather than a custom-built solution or one using traditional coding techniques (HTML and CSS-only) is a blog. Others might say that WordPress-powered blogs can also be traditional websites with content that isn’t updated frequently, when used as a static website or content management system.

These conflictive views of what a blog-like website is and isn’t can lead to the impression that you can have both a blog and a more traditional website. Technically speaking, I like to define a blog where media and content is updated at any regular interval. You don’t have to be using any advanced system, although they do usually make it easier.

This discussion will revolve over whether it is better to start a blog in addition to a regular site (for more frequently informing your customers, etc.) and whether blogs can work to your advantage if you haven’t started one (the benefits of starting a blog).

  1. Blogs can add a personal touch to your site. Although traditional website can be viewed as personal, attaching your name to your content can truly do wonders when it comes to adding the personal touch to your site.
  2. Content can be managed easier through a blog. With lots of content, you may find it hard using a file manager, especially if you upload multiple images, videos, or other forms of content to your site daily.
  3. You want to add more to your visitors’ experience. People want to see progress, and a blog is the best place to showcase any updates if you are a small or larger company. The more you update, the more frequently people will return to your site.
  4. Static webpages are harder to edit and customize. Technically speaking, it is easier to create fully featured websites using CMS/blog systems, because the back-end framework is there for development, and you are simply building out and upon the framework that exists.
  5. You need more areas to profit from. Some people have started blogs with no real intentions of making money. Now, their company’s blog is making them more money thorough direct ad sales than their main business. This is the power of blogging as a medium.
  6. Learn how to grow your site and business. Traditional sites lack the ability to constantly grow your customer base. You are restricted, for the most part, to one-way communication with your past and potential customers. With blogs, your visitors can leave direct input into your own thoughts and the progress of your actions.
  7. Working hard is a must. You have to have the ability to write for longer periods of time, at least compared to traditional websites and if you didn’t have any blog to start, then it is a definite requirement.
  8. Learn about your personal traits. Through the process of starting a blog, you can learn a whole lot about yourself. For one, you learn whether you are a transparent and honest person. Additionally, you have to think about how to present yourself, your particular writing styles, and how you respond to others. This can be a true testament to your success if you have questioned your ability to take your business, whatever it may be, to new heights.
  9. A more powerful message can be presented. A single website can only do so much for promoting your point. You expand that by creating a blog and influencing the decisions of others.

There may be thousands of other reasons that could help persuade you to start a blog in addition to a website, but these were a few of the main reasons. WordPress, and other blog systems, for that natter, make it extremely easy to begin, promote, and grow upon both static websites and fully-featured, expandable blogs.

Static content has long been a thing of the past. Sure, it works for product pages that don’t change frequently, but on the outside, people want an updated glimpse inside the progress of a company or website.
