The Key to Self-Promotion

by Kevin on June 14, 2009

Getting word out about your blog involves a ton of self-promotion in the beginning. Without this promotion, your blog will only be noticed if someone else notices it first, and in most cases, this doesn’t happen. If you don’t begin by promoting yourself, you will never make it anywhere.

The problem with a lot of people online, and often online, these days is that they don’t feel comfortable promoting themselves in front of other people. It might have something to do with the negative view of marketers and sales people that they have become accustomed to, but when faced with a sincere person, who is simply trying to promote his or her products, it becomes harder for them to reject the chance to meet someone new. First of all, you have to be presentable and provide something, then begin giving your sales pitch.

Most of you likely have a blog by now, or at least a service that they need to promote. Many of you likely have to get the required traffic and sales in order to generate enough income for survival.

Online Self Promotion: Make sure that you include a welcome message. Not just for your product, but a sincere one that lets you connect with the person (or people) you are trying to contact. Don’t appear like you are trying to get them to buy your product, at least not in the first email you send.

People love getting free stuff, especially if they aren’t obligated to purchase anything after they read the free article and before they’ve clicked links through to any site. They are more likely to purchase a product if they’ve been given a sampling of what they will be getting if they purchase, much like a demo or preview.

Another main factor in this form of promotion is that your image says more than anything about yourself. When you appear as a “scammer,” then your image will be forever tarnished, at least to the extent that you have caused damage.

Providing any of the following to your readers or potential customers can give your future readers and long-term customers more satisfied before they “buy:”

  • Extra content to people who may be less willing to purchase or continue reading what you have to say (it could be contained within the feed).
  • A trial or sample of what you readers/customers will be receiving once they purchase or continue the steps to gaining access to the item.
  • A reassurance that they will be getting what they really asked for. This may come months before they even think about purchasing, say through side projects that you have launched online.

Don’t think that because you own a site that you have to give everything away from free. While many people would rather not pay for e-books and other digital goods, you have to extend your self-promotion to promote your blog to potential advertisers, who may also be looking at purchasing your products or reading your blog.

Self-promotion isn’t negative, you should embrace it. Don’t inform your readers that you will be promoting yourself. It’s what we all have to do every day or we instantly lose traffic and sight of the direction that our blogs should be headed in.

It is so true, people often fail miserably at self-promotion of any kind. I use to be resume writer and getting people to give you all the positive stuff about themselves could be like pulling teeth: hard work and not easily forthcoming. People need to remember that this type of promotion comes from a healthy self-image. You’re a good person, who does good things and it is not wrong to acknowledge this as long as it is not used put down others, but instead to offer them your talent and skills to assist them in some way. It’s okay to be humble, but self-abasing is self-destructive.
