Establishing Your Brand/Yourself Online

by Kevin on September 9, 2009

Very much like the offline world, it certainly takes some time to establish yourself online. It may be a year or more before a significant number of people recognized your blog amongst the millions of others, and even longer if you’ve only started working online in any form.

The process may appear difficult to get a grasp of, at least initially. What you have to learn to do is separate yourself from everyone else in your niche, even those who may appear to have already established themselves over a number of years.

In reality, the formula is quite easy to develop, although we all have different ways of accomplishing this. Variations in this and how you develop your method are what the experts use to develop their own sites and marketing strategy.

Build a Network

You’ll likely find many blogs online that are part of a larger network. There is a clear reason behind this. When you have multiple people working for various blogs, you are able to target a much larger base of traffic and people visiting your sites.

Connect your name and brand to this network, then set up a number of sites under the brand. Keep in mind that the more “unique” domains you have, listed as a top-level domain, the more growth you will see over the long-term. People often associate individual sites by their full name, so this will help in this sense.

Reach Out to Other Bloggers

In order to make it big online, connect with people who may have been in the sam situation as you in the past. They will benefit from your help or advice, and you will benefit should they share word about your site on their own blog. Even though this may appear to be a small gesture, it certainly can increase your relationship with people who will help promoting you and spreading word about your site.

Join Online Groups and Contribute Elsewhere

As a blogger, you can’t stop writing articles just for your blog. You have to join other conversations, inviting others to continue the conversation on your own blog. This helps establish yourself as a leader, at a good percentage (generally more than ten percent) of the viewers of these threads, forums, etc. will return to your site to socialize and interact with you.

The bloggers and people who have created the largest sites on the web didn’t get there just through the creation of a new product, but they had to market it and push it out to other people who may have been there already.

Maintain a High Reputation

A high reputation will allow you to maintain the respect you need to continue the growth. If you notice that you receive bad feedback on other sites, you have to either choose to do some “reputation management” in the even that something goes wrong with your efforts in growth.

Some people ignore all negative feedback, whether in their comments or on other blogs, as it is only natural to see this form as you see growth, but if others aren’t getting the facts straight, then you have to intervene and present your side of the story.

Integrate Traditional Methods

Although we do live in a modern era, keep in mind that traditional methods of promotion and marketing still work in trying to promote your brand and name online.

Giving away stuff, in the forms of either downloads or business cards, can help people associate you with your brand, and this also conveys trust with your readers.

Conclusion

As I said earlier, you can’t really do much to speed up the process of building trust and loyalty to your brand online. You have to form a gradual approach, making your brand stand out amongst the others.

Bloggers need to be aware that there are many competitors, although you are essentially working for yourself in building a brand that is able to compete against the others.
