8 Qualities of a Great Blogger

by Kevin on October 7, 2009

Not everyone can be a great blogger, but there are some qualities that can make you appear to be a great blogger, one that is admired by other bloggers.

The Qualities of a Great Blogger

1. Be Open to New Ideas – Bloggers have traditionally been non-conformist, creating their own ideas and trends. You can’t be afraid to try something new, something that will set you apart from the competition. When you fail to be unique, someone else will take your place and define their own trends, setting themselves further apart from you (a position you wouldn’t want to ever be in).

2. Never Take Anything Personal – Unless you’ve revealed personal information on your blog, you should never, ever think that someone’s ideas should change the way you post on your blog. Covering one topic too much, with comments reflecting this, should only indicate that you are doing something right. You know your readers and you are the one viewing your analytics information. If you receive negative feedback, don’t think it is due to you – only take some of the comments and apply it to the overall focus of your blog.

3. Be Ready to Evolve – Evolving is the key to success online. The bloggers of sites that haven’t evolved have slowly died and haven’t been able to maintain their initial momentum of growth. Don’t post content that is no longer relevant, and constantly refresh your blog with new content.

4. Be Sociable – One of the reasons people become bloggers is to share information with others. If you stop there, your readers will notice. You need to interact with your readers – share ideas with them through Twitter, the comments area, and through email. Doing this ensures that they will return to your blog, remembering your ideas.

5. Set a Schedule, but Constantly Tweak It – Even though I don’t maintain a strict schedule for this blog, I am to keep the content rather fresh and new on the main page. This is good for new visitors, who see that the bog has recently been updated, as well as provides new information for people who have already subscribed to the blog. Make sure your content is updated frequently, following a schedule. Evolve it over time, and vary when you publish.

6. Be Courteous and Respectful to Your Readers – Without your readers, there would be no reason for you to blog unless you are keeping a journal of your personal ideas. Readers help promote your blog and provide a source of income, if you are going down that route. Don’t disrespect them if they provide ideas that don’t comply with your own standards. Never use the email addresses of your commenters to send junk/spam mail.

7. Remain on Topic – Staying on topic can be difficult at times, especially when there isn’t much to write about. Sometimes, it is easier to take a blog in a more personal direction, although this can infuriate your readers, who want relevant content specially within the area that your blog was designed to cover.

8. Persistence – Although the eighth quality, this may be the most important. People who have no desire or motivation to blog quit within the first few days. People who are able to be persistent, keeping with the blog even during low traffic and low revenue will likely succeed in the long-term.

Conclusion

If there are any other qualities you feel should be included in this list, please let me know in the comments area. Which of the above qualities do you feel is most important?

Persistence is so important. Most start-up bloggers quite mid-way after they failed to sustain their good blogging habit.
