Twitter Users Want News-Related Tweets

In a user sample released on Friday by the online advertising network Chitika, most Twitter users (28.49 percent) click on links embedded within tweets to news-related stories. Even though this may not impact you, especially if you don’t use Twitter at the moment, it confirms the idea that Twitter users want to stay up-to-date on breaking news stories.

Where Twitter Users are Clicking

Let’s say that you run any type of site, as nearly every topic has some form of news involved. Publishing to Twitter should involve some form or relevant content, not just a tip or resource. People want to be informed of what is happening from around the world.

The following are the other leading clicked through links on Twitter:

  • Movie-Related Sites – 22.56 percent
  • Technology – 13.39 percent
  • Medical – 7.98 percent
  • Video Games – 4.64 percent
  • Celebrity – 3.94 percent
  • How-To – 2.88 percent

Although you would expect results to be fairly similar to those listed above, we have to take into consideration that these are only links being tracked. It does not refer to what people are searching for, and the results would be different if that were the case. People search for personal topics and tips on Twitter, but do more so on Google/other search engines, where the content has already been “sorted through.”
