Disconnect Yourself for Increased Productivity

One of the problems that we are now having with being connected to the Internet 24/7 is that we become distracted much more frequently. When the Internet was relatively new and costs were higher (with many companies charing per hour/minute of use), we focused on being online as little as possible. Now that those days are over, it is time to get focused – think about how you can be more productive by disconnecting yourself.

What I mean by disconnecting yourself is that you physically (or mentally) disconnect yourself from the web. Turn off your wireless or use some other method to truly separate yourself from the Internet. Your goal is to become inspired from your natural surroundings and what you think, rather than what others are influencing you to write.

For example, jot some ideas down in a notebook or sheets of paper, and these will act as your draft. It also helps you to focus more on writing without a spell checker, as we have all become accustomed of doing.

The ideas will likely flow more naturally, and you will find it less frustrating to focus on what you need to get done. By the time the day is over, you may find yourself with more ideas and concepts developed than if you had been writing on your computer.

Another common strategy that people have when trying to focus is to use an application or website that blocks out distractions. WriteRoom for the Mac, DarkRoom for Windows, or the built-in full-screen writer for WordPress, although you have to be connected to the Internet for this to work.

Should you still be paying for how much you use your Internet, you’ll likely save money in the long-run, since you’ll be connected less often, other than doing the average web surfing and communicating with your readers.

See if this works for yourself – disconnect for a few hours each day to see whether you can improve your productivity, setting yourself away from all technology.
