No Blog? Use Social Networking to Grow Your Presence

by Kevin on November 25, 2009

There are many people online who are starting to get a taste of what blogging is like and what they need to do to promote themselves online, although they might not yet have a blog.

At one time, having a blog was a requirement if you wanted to really create a professional portfolio online. While having a blog can still give you an advantage over someone who only has a Facebook or Twitter profile, you need to realize that you must branch out in order to be noticed.

Social Profiles Get Good Rankings

Most social networking services get really good rankings in search engines for any terms that you associate with them. In most cases, this would either be your name or your business.

Let’s say you want to start a website in the near future. You can create a Twitter/Facebook page for this site (as long as you have the domain registered) and begin building buzz before you launch.

Using a method like this can certainly help you when you don’t have the time or funding to contribute to advertising campaigns.

“Facebook and Twitter are Just for Personal Use”

If you hear someone say this, you might want to correct them and tell them that there are more uses to these sites than just personal use. Businesses have been using the social networking services for quite some time, and Twitter will be rolling out expanded professional accounts in the near future – they aren’t going away.

Companies have these accounts to better connect with their customers and users, and with them, they can address any concerns a group of them may have. It’s faster, more efficient, and more affordable then having to send out an email to all their customers and address any media concerns.

Getting Information Faster

Having a blog can do wonders for your branding and promotion, however it doesn’t solve the main problem. That problem is that people want to hear what separates you from the next person, and they don’t want to read through a long description about yourself to discover who’s behind the profile (or blog).

Twitter/Facebook make it easy, with brief introductory statements placed within your sidebar, and they ensure you can directly communicate your main point to anyone who sees your profile.

Conclusion – What do you think about using these methods to promote your “non-existent” blog or business online?

I prefer using Twitter for business or blogging purposes. But Facebook for me is still a site for personal use

I have to agree with you on that one. I have just begun experimenting with Facebook for business/blog purposes, but generally, you’ll see faster results with Twitter.
