Test Your Website Design for Maximum Exposure

by Kevin on December 22, 2009

Although anyone with an Internet connection can access your website, they all interact with it differently. For example, those on mobile phones or smaller screens will have a more difficult time seeing the ads within your sidebar or call to action buttons placed near the middle of the page.

Google has introduced a free tool, which doesn’t require any plugins or extensions to be installed in order to make the most use of it. It is quite simple to use – simply go to their Browser Size Page, and input your URL or any other site that you want to test.

It works best for websites with a fixed layout aligned to the left. Therefore, a majority of blogs don’t necessarily apply, as most blogs use a flexible page layout. However, the tool can still be used, although you will need to resize the window to a size where the scrollbar at the bottom portion of the browser doesn’t display – the window is at the maximum “viewable” resolution.

Taking a look at the screenshot, you can see that 90% or more of the “average” users who see my site will see all the ads, and between 60-80% will be able to see the length of the first post (including the “read more” link) without having to scroll much down the page.

Using this tool (or similar ones out there) will allow you to better design your website around ads and content, in order to address the largest visitor base possible.

This is a great idea! I always wonder what my site looks like in different browsers because I have a nice 19″ monitor, and someone else might only have a 13″ laptop.

Will definitely be using this, thank you.
